The ESR Best Article of 2025 Award was presented to Georg Kanitsar for his paper “Leaving the bike unlocked: trust discrimination in inter-ethnic encounters”. The jury praised the paper’s innovative approach and its contribution to advancing research on trust and inter-ethnic relations.

Two articles received runner-up recognition (in alphabetical order):

• Filippo Andrei, Davide Barrera, Krzysztof Krakowski and Emilio Sulis for “Trust intermediary in a cryptomarket for illegal drugs”
• Helen Kowalewska and Agnese Vitali for “The female-breadwinner well-being ‘penalty’: differences by men’s (un)employment and country”

The winner receives a cash prize of €500. In addition, the winning article and the two runners-up are made freely available in open access on the European Sociological Review website (Oxford University Press) for one month.

At the ECSR Annual Conference, held at the University of Cologne from September 3–5, 2025, the winners of the ECSR Prize for the Best PhD Thesis of the Year were officially announced.

The 1st prize was awarded to Said Hassan for his thesis “Residential Segregation, School Contexts, and Educational Inequalities”. 

Two theses received 2nd prize recognition (in alphabetical order). Kasimir Dederichs, “Who (else) is Involved? – How Voluntary Associations Connect and Separate Us” and Chen-Hao Hsu, “Employment Instability, Family Formation, and Motherhood Penalties: Comparative and Life Course Perspectives”.

The 3rd prize was awarded to Filippo Gioachin for his thesis “Life Chances and Life Courses: Institutional Transformations and the Social Stratification of Contemporary Life Course Inequalities”.

The winner of the first prize receives a cash award of €500. All awarded theses are recognized for their significant contributions to sociological research and to advancing the life course perspective in comparative research.

The grant is designed to contribute up to 1,000 EUR for travel and accommodation costs, conference fee and conference dinner.

The opening date for applications is March 5, 2025, and the closing date is March 15, 2025. Decisions on grants will be made by April 5, 2025.

Eligibility and rules

• Applicants must be from an institution in one of the EU “Inclusiveness Target Countries” (for list see below).
• Applicants must have their abstract accepted for (co-)presentation (paper or poster) at the 2025 ECSR Annual Conference in Cologne.
• Priority will be given to researchers in the early stages of their career.
• The ECSR Board will assess the applications.
• The grant covers travel and accommodation costs (for the period of the conference), the conference fee (registration via early bird fee is required) and conference dinner. It does not cover additional expenses during the conference stay, such as local transportation, food, insurance, or additional days. Reimbursement will only be made if the grant holder (co-)presents the paper/poster at the conference. Detailed rules for reimbursement are available here.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Professor Ellu Saar (08.10.1955 – 02.06.2024), a former member of the Board of the European Consortium for Sociological Research.

Ellu was a key figure in sociology in Estonia, and was affiliated with the Institute of International and Social Studies (IISS) for over 35 years. She has served as a Professor of Sociology at the School of Governance, Law and Society (SOGOLAS) at Tallinn University since 2001. From 2015 to 2021, she led the sociology programs, and from 2016 to 2023, she directed the Centre of Excellence in Life Course Studies. She also served on the editorial boards of the European Sociological Review and European Societies. In 2014, she was awarded the Estonian Research Prize in Social Sciences, and in 2022, she was elected a member of the Estonian Academy of Sciences.

Ellu published 176 journal articles, monographs, books, and book chapters over the course of her career. Her research focused primarily on the life course, sociology of education, social stratification, and lifelong learning. Her internship at the Max Planck Institute for Educational Research in Berlin in the early 1990s was pivotal in establishing international collaborations and involving Estonian sociologists in international research networks. She participated in a very wide range of research collaborations. Notably, Ellu led the first European Commission Framework Programme project in the social sciences led by an Eastern European partner, titled “Lifelong Learning Policies in Europe.” She made a substantial contribution to the development of sociology in Estonia.

Ellu left us in the midst of a busy working life. She will be sadly missed.
